How the reverse calculation works

Start with your desired clock-out date and time, then subtract your paid work duration and every unpaid break.

Clock-out − paid work − unpaid break = clock-in

The selected date removes the guesswork for overnight shifts: the result shows the actual earlier calendar date. Paid rest breaks are already inside paid work time, so do not subtract them again.

Clock-in time questions

What time should I clock in to leave at 5:30 PM?

For 8 paid work hours and a 30-minute unpaid lunch, clock in at 9:00 AM. If the lunch is paid, clock in at 9:30 AM.

Does an unpaid lunch make me clock in earlier?

Yes. To keep the same clock-out time, subtract the unpaid lunch as well as the paid work duration. Paid breaks should not be entered as unpaid time.

Can I enter a 7-hour 45-minute shift?

Yes. Enter 7 in the hours field and 45 in the minutes field. The result updates immediately.

Can this calculate an overnight shift?

Yes. The chosen clock-out date lets the calculator show the real earlier start date. For example, leaving at 6:00 AM after 8 paid hours and a 30-minute unpaid break means clocking in at 9:30 PM on the previous calendar day.

Can I add the planned shift to my calendar?

Yes. Add to calendar downloads an ICS file with the calculated start and end dates and times. The file uses the local time shown on this device and can be imported into most calendar apps.

What happens around daylight-saving changes?

This planner subtracts the entered duration as elapsed time using your device’s local time zone. Calendar clocks can jump forward or backward on a daylight-saving transition, so verify unusual overnight results against your official schedule.

Does Work Ends At save my schedule?

Your latest duration and break settings are saved only in your browser on this device. The selected date is not retained unless it is included in a share link. Nothing is uploaded by this calculator, and no account is required.

Planning estimate only. Use your employer’s official schedule and timekeeping rules for payroll records.
